Think Before You Drink

Did you know our bodies cannot store calories from alcohol like we store calories from food? When you drink alcohol your body immediately stops what it is doing (for example burning off calories from your last meal) and begins to process the alcohol. This puts a stop on fat metabolism to metabolize the alcohol resulting in whatever food was eaten being stored as fat. A study published by “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” found that while metabolizing alcohol, fat metabolism decreased by 73%. So if you are looking to shed fat, back off of the booze for a while.

Cenegenics recommends removing alcohol from your diet for 8 weeks while trying to shed fat and build muscle. Once blood levels and hormones have stabilized as well as fat loss has occurred it is okay to consume 1-2 drinks of alcohol per day. But keep in mind although at a healthy weight the body still stops everything to process the alcohol, so choose wisely when to drink.

If you must indulge, dry red wine is low in carbohydrates and high in antioxidants which make it the most “healthful” alcoholic beverage of choice.
